Band lessons

Report

Group band lessons are taught using Sound Innovations. This method book comes with a DVD giving the student a visual guide to help in the early stages of development. This book also comes with a Play along CD. Using this CD to practice with will enable a student to improve aspects of their playing such as rhythm, pitch, range, and overall musicianship.

Piano Lessons

Report

Group Piano is a positive and fun approach to the first steps of learning to play the piano. This class is available to Kindergarten through third grades and is a great compliment to the band program. Students participating in the piano classes learn rhythms, pitches, note reading, and more.

Mr. Barton

This will be Mr. Barton’s fifth year with Band for Today. Previously, he has experience teaching in the School District of Philadelphia and the Clarke County School District (Athens, GA). Mr. Barton graduated from Millersville University (PA) in 2003 with a B.S. in music education and from Ithaca College in 2005 with a M.M. in trombone performance.

Ms. Helstad

Ms. Helstad is excited to teach with Band for Today! She has previously taught general music in Chicago, middle school band and choir in Minnesota, and middle school band and choir in Nevada. She also served as an adjunct professor of saxophone at the University of Nevada-Reno for two years before moving back to the Midwest.

Mr. Portillo

There are many reasons why Mr. Portillo loves to teach music, like seeing his students excited when they conquer something that was once difficult, or watching the band rally around one person who may have had a difficult time.

Mrs. Potempa

Darian Potempa has been with Band for Today for ten years. She graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign with a Bachelor in Music Education. Darian thinks that music is an integral part of a student’s education

Chicago Youth Symphony Brass Quintet

The Chicago Youth Symphony Brass Quintet performs for students at the Band For Today Solo Contest in Wheaton, IL.

Band For Today Plays Chicago Wolves

Over 100 band students played before the Chicago Wolves game at the Allstate Arena. The band played a number of songs including We Will Rock You, Surfin' USA and Let's Go Band! Afterwards, students enjoyed a fireworks and laser showed followed by a great hockey game.
