Your Partner for Tuition-Free Music Education in Chicago
At People's Music School, we have dedicated 50 years to transforming lives through intensive, tuition-free music education. Established in 1976 by Dr. Rita Sim, we remain Chicago's largest program providing underserved youth access to rigorous musical training. Our sequential curriculum spans four pillars: private lessons, ensembles, music theory, and performance opportunities, delivered by 65 professional teaching artists. Through mandatory family service participation, we maintain operational sustainability while fostering community engagement. Our students average four hours of weekly instruction, accumulating over 106,000 annual learning hours. Proven outcomes include 93% high school graduation rates and 2x college completion likelihood.

We maintain a culture of excellence through performance evaluations, creative self-expression development, and leadership training via our SLAM program. With locations across Chicago, including our first permanent South Side home, we serve over 2,000 students annually. Third Coast Percussion, Grammy Award-winning ensemble, affirms our impactful teaching methods. Our Board of Directors and Associate Board work relentlessly to expand access and ensure educational equity. The D'Addario Foundation and other supporters enable our mission of making music education accessible to all.

I've been taking violin here for 4 years and it has been so much fun! I also did choir for a year and theory every year! This is the best way to learn how to play an instrument! Love it here!

This music school, which doesn't charge students tuition, and has people waiting in line outside for a full week so that they can get their children (mostly) in to the program. Though it's had some publicity, it's mostly a hidden gem, and deserves all of the notice it can get.
